AS DUSTY spoke so highly of Maggie and their growing

friendship, Janice began asking to meet the mysterious and fabled society leader. Finally, when the garden was well along, Dusty agreed, and after clearing the visit with Maggie, brought her with him the next day. Janice was thrilled but also a little frightened. She knew of Maggie’s formidable reputation as a rather imperial figure who did not suffer fools gladly. Her exclusiveness was legendary.

“I’m very nervous,” Janice admitted. “Marguerite Fallon has a reputation for being extremely selective about whom she admits to the citadel. What if she doesn’t like me?”

“That’s nonsense. She’s a real charmer and very, very wise, I’ve found. She’s a delightful and warm-hearted woman. She lets her reputation keep her from having to deal with social climbers and fools in general. The two of you will undoubtedly form a mutual admiration society.”

Maggie herself opened the door, a big smile on her face as she ushered them in. “It’s just the three of us. I gave the staff the day off so we could just settle down and get to know each other. I’ve made some little sandwiches and a pot of tea. While Dusty continues his magic in the garden, we’ll have a nice long chat. Oh,” she added, grasping Janice’s hand in her own, “and you must call me Maggie like your brother. I think I’d rather like that.”

As he detoured into the fabulous living room, Dusty watched his sister’s reaction to her surroundings, grinning as he watched the awed look come over her face, much like his own must have looked that first day. She actually came to a complete stop in the middle of the living room and exclaimed, “Fabergé eggs! How beautiful.”

“You can inspect them at your leisure after lunch,” Maggie told her, leading the way back to the same little nook where she and Dusty had started their friendship. “You go ahead with whatever work you’d planned for today, Dusty, while Janice and I discuss you at great length.”

“Oh no. I’ll be dissected like a poor frog in a biology class.”

“Don’t worry, brother dear, we’ll probably end up as the Dusty Rhoades Fan Club.”

“That sounds much worse,” he quipped as he left them and went out onto the roof.

He stretched his arms up toward the sky to loosen up. It was a nearly perfect day: not too warm, a slight breeze, and big clouds crossing overhead like fat, white blimps. He shed his jacket and knelt down to continue planting a border of rosemary near the bay window for its fragrance and interesting look. He heard the murmured conversation from inside. It seemed the two women were hitting it off famously. He wasn’t surprised. He dug into the newly placed loam, loving the feeling of the rich soil running through his fingers, and began to plant the herbs.

“I’m very worried about Dusty,” he heard Janice say.

Dusty realized they had settled at the table, and the window was open. He knew he should let
